A Point in History through Rare Pre-Decimal Coins
Square Pennies
Square pennies are recognized as historically significant and represent a truly unique nationalist story in Australia's history. This is due to the time following World War I when the Australian Labour Government started a movement to reject the British coins for a more Australian representation. This is through the square-shaped coins as well as the introduction of a new metal which is the cupro-nickel. Some feature the kookaburra in the design as shown in the example of the 1920 Type 7 Penny. However, the response to the change was below what they had expected, and the movement died down due to people's resistance to change and complication to practically implement the newly shaped coins in real life.
