Valuing Old Coins
Mint state coins
At the peak of collectability, mint state coins represent the highest grade range most collectors will strive for and indicates a coin shows no signs of having been circulated. These grades range from MS60 to MS70 though most uncirculated coins will be in the MS62-64 range. Coins aren't often produced in higher grades as the bagging process at the mint will likely damage the surfaces to preclude such grades while its rarely harsh enough to push a coin below MS62.
The factors that go into grading a mint state coin are:
- surfaces which considers how much damage the coin has received in the minting process,
- lustre which considers both how the coin's strike has impacted its level of lustre and to what degree environmental exposure has decreased this,
- strike which considers how sharply a coin has been struck up, and
- eye appeal which considers the subjective beauty of a coin
Because there are so many different combinations of these factors its not possible to use photos to define these grades specifically but each of the characteristics can be done so separately. This will be covered in a future article.
Most older coins are of some value in mint state so once you've confirmed this through NumisTip, it's generally worth getting the coin certified to help determine where from 60-70 your coin sits and thus enable you to value it more accurately through NumisTip.
