Valuing Old Coins
Circulated coins (PO1 - VF35)
Lower grade coins are generally graded exclusively by detail which measures how much wear the coin has received. Compare the level of detail with a perfect coin to determine where on the scale from 1-45 it goes. The following coins have been graded by PCGS and show the level of detail expected at each grade level:
FR2:
GO4:
VG8:
F12:
VF20:
VF30:
As can be seen from this run of images, detail increases as the grade does. The more detail the better the coin grades and consequently the more valuable the coin is. Once graded, look the coin up in Numistip for a value. In the case of the last coin, a 1934 florin:
As can be seen, this coin can be worth up to $8,200 but in VF30 it's worth just $38. There is no wholesale value listed which means it generally won't be purchased by a dealer for more than bullion and is strictly for the collector market.
