Collecting Old Australian Coins
Crown
The highest pre-decimal denomination was the crown, equal to five shillings, it was originally issued as a commemorative piece to mark King George VI acceding to the throne. This appeal was lost when the coin was again issued in 1938 though only 101,000 pieces were produced. This led to its eventual scarcity though the novelty of such a large coin meant that a high proportion of these were hoarded.
For this reason the both dates are readily available in mint state though the 1938 starts at about $300 while the 1937 can be easily found below $100. In circulated grades the 1937 can be found for around $35 while the 1938 starts at about $100.
