The Silver of Edward VII

Walter Eigner Although Australia had been a nation since 1901, it wasn't until 1910 that her first official coins were produced. While the Melbourne mint was producing sovereigns and half sovereigns at the time, these were technically Imperial British coins. The first coins issued specifically for Australia were struck in silver and of the denominations threepence, sixpence, shilling, and florin. Machin Obverse

The Arnold Machin effigy of Queen Elizabeth II was introduced with the one cent and continued as the regular design up until 1984, after which it was used sporadically on collector coins.

Maklouf Obverse

In 1985 Australia's coin designs were updated with the Maklouf portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This was a short lived series concluding with the end of the one cent series in 1991. Furthermore, only the 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1990 were actually issued into circulation, the other two years were issued only in mint sets.
