Sales History

?

In 1914 the Heaton mint produced 1.2 million half pennies for circulation in Australia. The date has become one of the semi-key dates of the series, though more common than its Royal mint brother. A couple of premium mint state examples originated out of a hoard London though the date is still very scarce in the upper grades and finding an example with any reasonable amount of original mint brilliance is somewhat difficult, though possible thanks to some of the better examples from the London hoard. This type is distinguished from the 1914 plain half penny by the mintmark H below the lower scroll on the reverse, similar to the 1912 Heaton mint half penny.

The year is usually well struck up, and like the 1912, mint lustre is usually quite intense making higher mint state grades possible, though due to the relative rarity of the coin in mint state, such higher grade pieces would nevertheless be quite rare, if in existence at all.
