?

As in 1916 and in 1918, the Calcutta mint struck half pennies for Australia distinguishable by an I mintmark below the lower scroll on the reverse much like the 1916.

The 1917 half penny is a relatively common piece in lower grades though gets quite scarce in mint state , especially if sought in the higher mint state grades with only 7 PCGS certified examples in mint state at this time, compared with 22 of the generally more expensive 1916 (PCGS Population Report, 2010 . This indicates that the year is somewhat undervalued with the sweet spot being at the MS64 level, though finding one can still present quite a challenge with very few certified mint state examples appearing on the market each year. One must take some care with this year to avoid cleaned examples which seem abundant for the year, probably to make up for the lack of genuine mint state examples. As with the 1916 Calcutta mint half penny, the 1917 is almost always well struck up and so when the date does turn up, often makes better than average mint state grades when compared with other half penny years.
