The 1924 Florin was produced at both the Melbourne and Sydney Mint with a total mintage of 1,582,674. This was a slightly low mintage due to a reduced overall demand for coins which began in around 1922. Population reports by PCGS show that this type is relatively scarce with the majority of mint-state pieces grading MS63 and the finest piece grading MS66. (PCGS, 2017) Collectors seeking more affordable mint-state example from this era may do well to investigate the 1928 or 1931 Florin.

This was the first year that the Sydney Mint had been involved in the production of Australian Florins. The Mint had been struggling for a number of years with substantial losses causing fears that the establishment would soon be closed. Some in Sydney had expressed substantial anger that the Melbourne Mint had been used as the key mint for the new Australian currency and encouraged the coinage demand to be split. The Sydney newspaper 'The Sun' defended their Mint and argued that the Melbourne Mint had been unfairly favoured. It also claimed that, when the Commonwealth establishes its own mint, it should be in Sydney. (The Sun, 1923) The increased role of the Sydney Mint in producing Florins and other Australian coins would not save the mint which shut down in 1926.
