Sales History

?

The 1954 is one of the scarcer shillings of the Elizabeth II series to acquire in mint state despite the relatively high mintage of about 16 million. This is due to the low number of bank rolls surfacing, the number of mint state examples surviving is quite limited and higher mint state grades very difficult to source. This coin and the 1953 ( ) form a 2 year series which omitted the F:D (FIDEI DEF) from the obverse legend . Due to public outcry F:D was restored on all the 1955 issues except the half penny ( ) which would not see it until 1959 ( ).
