?

The 1953 Penny was the first year in the Queen Elizabeth II series. It was struck at both the Royal Mint branches in Melbourne and Perth with total mintage 's of 6,936,000 and 6,202,800 respectively. These two varieties can be differentiated by a small dot mint-mark located after 'AUSTRALIA' on the Perth issue. As a result of the similar mintage figures both mint varieties demand relatively similar prices and are very affordable into mint-state.

It has been discovered that there are also two varieties of the Melbourne Mint pieces which can be differentiated by the '5' in the date. The '5' on the first variety has pronounced serif on the upper right 'hat' of the number. The second variety is far more rare and features a much less pronounced serif in this same location.
