Sales History

?

In 1944 the Perth mint struck just shy of 28 million pennies to assist with the increased currency circulation brought about by foreign troops stationed in Australia. This was in addition to just 2 million pennies produced by the Melbourne mint. The date is easy to acquire in circulated grades although while readily obtainable in mint state, finding the piece above MS64 can be quite a challenge with characteristic poor strike depth and bagmarked fields. The Perth mint 1944 penny is differentiated from the Melbourne mint issue by a small dot after the Y in PENNY on the reverse :

The Melbourne mint issue is by far the scarcer issue with mintage of only 2 million, compared with the Perth mint's 27 million though above MS64 the Perth mint issue is near impossible to source while the characteristic strong strike of the Melbourne mint issue makes it relatively easy to source.
