A total of 7,438,320 pennies were struck in 1921 at Australian mints making the year one
of the most common in the series. The Melbourne mint produced 7,292,160 pennies during the year while the Sydney mint produced
146,160 pennies
(Coin Web, 2007)
in January of 1921. Considering that the Sydney mint had not yet received 1921 reversedies by January, it can be inferred that the Sydney 1921 mintage
consisted of coins dated 1920 leaving a mintage figure of 7,292,160 for 1921. The 1921 is
a very common year in lower grades but sourcing the coin in better condition will prove to be quite a challenge. In mint state the coin is anything but common with a fewer than 5 appearances per year of genuine
mint state coins. Nevertheless, the coin is available right up to MS65
(PCGS Population Report, 2011)
so the keen collector certainly has the chance of filling this hole with a choice coin, finding such a coin for an affordable
price however, would be nothing short of impossible.
