The 1932 half penny, while an easy date to acquire in circulated grades, is one of the scarcest dates of the 1930s in
mint state, especially if sought with original mint brilliance. While its
mintage
of about 2.5 million may be out shadowed by the sub million mintages of 1930 and 1931 it is by no means as common as
the 1933-36 range of half pennies. With the Great Depression peaking in Australia, the deflationary nature of the economy
at the time ensured that very few people could afford to hoard coins. This limited the number of mint state
examples available of the 1932 half penny although being dated towards the end of the series made it subject to hoarding
in subsequent years - these however, would rarely have graded in mint state. The year is almost
always well struck up and uncirculated examples tend to average
around MS64. In 1932 the Melbourne mint also produced a
proof
of record strike.
