This Starfish piece was released in 2010 as part of the Perth mint
's Sea Life series. The series celebrates some of Australia's most unique reef dwelling species. The
reverse of this particular coin features a coloured depiction of the Starfish with the
legend
'AUSTRALIAN SEA LIFE II - THE REEF' and 'STARFISH'. The obverse houses
the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the
legend
'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - 50 CENTS - 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER - 2011.'
The starfish is one of the worlds most iconic reef dwellers. There are approximately two thousand species of the creature
that can be found in all of the world's oceans.
(National Geographic, 2017)
The creatures have a central disc from which five arms protrude (some species have additional arms). Some species have
colours that allow them to camouflage themselves from or even intimidate predators. Interestingly the starfish is capable
of regenerating damaged or lost limbs.
