The commemoration of 150 years of state government in Victoria is celebrated by the release of this coin. It was struck in sterling silver in 2006. It was released as part of a set containing a total of six coins. The other coins included in the 150 years of state government commemorative set are Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. The reverse of this coin was designed by Wojciech Pietranik and shows an impression of a shape of the state of Victoria with its name continuously written in block capitals inside it. The design also shows an outline of Australia and determines the location of New South Wales within it. The legend 150 YEARS OF STATE GOVERNMENT 5 DOLLARS is included in the design. The obverse was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and contains a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned, right facing with earrings. It also has the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2006.

On the 22nd May 1856, a significant landmark in Australian history took place. The newly elected, Victorian State Parliament sat for the first time. Now, 150 years later, Victoria celebrates its sesquicentenary of responsible government. Since its inception, the Government has evolved into the 21st century with some alterations and enhancements. The main ones being the setting up of a secret ballot and the right of ALL men to vote. This may seem trivial but this alone put Australia ahead of its time regarding democratic development. Women were given the right to vote back in 1902, even though they could not be democratically elected until 1918.It was on the 5th August, 1850 that the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed the Australian Constitutions Act 1850 which allowed for the separation of Victoria from New South Wales. Victoria had previously been known as the Port Phillip District. Legislation was passed by the Parliament of New South Wales which made provision for Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia to formally create a separate colony of the United Kingdom on the 1st July 1851. They each formed a separate legislative council consisting of thirty members (Parliament of Victoria, 2013) .
