The 1955
proof
threepence is a rare piece with a
mintage
of just 311 though 733
specimen
strikes were also struck which most collectors collect as the same type. The piece can be distinguished by an intense
mirror finish as opposed to the
specimen
strike which has a
cartwheel finish. Unlike the higher denominations, the strike depth between the
proof
and
specimen
strikes are similar indicating that the Melbourne mint had no problem striking up the smaller sized coin.
