In 1951 the Royal Mint in London produced 18,000,000 Pennies for Australia. In the same year
the Melbourne Mint produced a further 21,240,000 pieces and the Perth Mint
an additional 12,888,000. The London variety can also be distinguished form the other varieties by a small 'PL' mint-mark located along the rim to the right of the denomination 'PENNY.'
PL is an abbreviation of pecunia londinii (money of London) or percussa londinio (struck at London).
London 'PL' mint-mark on a 1951-PL Penny.
Perth dot mint-mark on a 1951-Y Proof Penny.
The 1951-PL Penny is a very common type that is generally well struck up. The type is easily obtainable into mint-state
with examples as high as MS64 selling for less than fifty dollars.
