The threepence switched over to the Kruger Gray reverse in 1937 though
no circulation coins were issued until 1938; the design continued until 1952. The design features wheat stalks with AUSTRALIA
around the top of the design, THREEPENCE around the bottom, and the year in the middle split on either side of the wheat
stalks. The obverse features an uncrowned bust of King George VI facing
to the left and the
legend, GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX
F : D : IND : IMP ('George VI, by the grace of god, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India')
which was used up until 1948 then changed because of the independence of India. Date set collectors will have no problems
completing the series with the key dates 1942, 1942-S, and 1943-S being readily available in lower grades, though the 1942
tends to command reasonably strong prices. In mint state, type set collectors would find best value
in the 1938, 1942-D, 1943-D, and 1944-S threepence. Threepence in this series were struck at the Melbourne, Denver, and San
Francisco mints with the latter two mints identifiable by a 'D' or 'S'
mintmark
respectively underneath the second two digits of the date.
