The 1927 Half Penny is one of the more common half pennies of the 1920s especially if sought in the lower
mint state grades. With just over 3 million pieces struck solely at the Melbourne
mint, obtaining the coin in circulated grades
does not pose any significant challenge. Collectable examples of the date tend to range from AU58 to MS64 though obtaining
the coin with any significant amount of mint brilliance does represent quite a challenge with very
few certified examples thus far.
(PCGS Population Report, 2011)
The date is usually well struck up owing to the refined minting process at the Melbourne
mint
which would be seemingly perfected by the early 1930s though light surface hairlines from the
handling process at the
mint
tend to preclude grades higher than MS64. The Melbourne
mint
also produced a proof of record strike in 1927.
