The 1922 specimen threepence is a proof of record striking produced by the Melbourne mint. Fewer than 10 pieces are thought to have been produced, with only one recent sighting in private hands. The type can be identified by frosted devices on hazy, mirror fields with horizontal die polishing striations across the reverse, though toning may make this less evident. Unlike most business strikes, surfaces are smooth and even and the coin is generally well struck up with some very minor weakness to the star.
