The 1858 is the easiest date in the series to acquire in any grade with a small batch of high grade examples surfacing
in India in the mid-70s. It is however by no means common with a
mintage
of 483,000. While low in comparison with most Australian coins, this was quite high for a circulation coin of the era
and the Royal mint branch in Sydney needed to take extra initiatives to extend the working life of their
dies
. One such technique commonly employed by Sydney during this period was the repunching individual letters into the
dies
as letters began to wear away. This gave rise to a number of
varieties
in which the incorrect letter was punched into the
dies.

With the India hoard offering coins around the mid-AU level, values for the piece rise dramatically beyond this with
an example in 2007 selling for AU$93,200
(Noble, J, 2007)
. Sales at this level however are very infrequent with only one example slabbed in
mint state
thus far
(PCGS, 2017)
.
