This Athena coin was released in 2015 as part of the Perth Mint's 'Goddesses of Olympus' series. The three coin series was struck in high relief with an antiqued finish. The reverse of this particular coin features Athena wielding spear and shield with the inscription 'ATHENA.' The obverse houses the Ian Rank-Broadly portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend 'QUEEN ELIZABETH II - 2OZ 999 SILVER - 2015 TUVALU - 2 DOLLARS.'

Athena was said to be the favourite daughter of Zeus. There are a number of myths surrounding her birth but she was generally described as emerging from Zeus's forehead fully armoured. She was the goddess of wisdom, good counsel, war, weaving, pottery, and a number of other crafts. Athena and Poseidon famously competed for the patronage of Athens. The competition required both gods to create a gift which would then be judged by the King of Athens. In some versions of the story Poseidon created a salt water spring which was said to provide the Athenians with access to trade and water while in others he provided them with the first horse. Athena created the first domesticated olive tree which brought economic prosperity through wood, oil, and food. The King of Athens chose Athena'sgift as superior and she became the patron Goddess of Athens.
