This 2014 German New Guinea piece is part of the Australia at War collection. The reverse features a map of Australia and what was then German New Guinea with the strategically important wireless station and the Australian destroyer the HMAS Warrego. The reverse text states "GEMRAN NEW GUINEA 1914" with the denomination "50". The obverse has the standard Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2014".

In the years prior to World War I the German colonial empire was established with territories including German New Guinea on the north eastern section of New Guinea. With the beginning of World War I removing German influence from the Pacific became a key objective. (Australian War Memorial, 2017) On the 11th of September 1914 the Australian Expeditionary Force landed on German New Guinea and attempt to capture the German wireless station at Bita Paka. (Michael Rowland, 2014) The German forces put up some resistance (the Battle of Bita Paka) but the expeditionary force was quickly successful.
