This 2014 Boer War piece is part of the Australia at War collection. The reverse features a mounted Australian serviceman surrounded by olive leaves and atop the ribbon bar of the Queen's South Africa Medal and the King's South Africa Medal. The reverse legend states "BOER WAR" with the denomination "50" and the dates "1899 1902". The obverse has the standard Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2014".

The Boer in 1899 when the Boer States (descendants of Dutch settlers) declared war on the the British following a British raid in 1896. The Boer forces were quickly pushed into defensive guerrilla warfare. The British army was reinforced by colonial troops from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ceylon and India. Australian troops' had high value for the British as they were often skilled with horses and rifles. Approximately 16,000 Australian's served in the Boer War with at least 600 dying. The British had gained effective control by late 1900 but the conflict did not completely cease until 1902. (Australian Government, 2008)
