This Megalania piece was released in 2014 by the Perth Mint as
part of the Megafauna series. The series features five of the extraordinarily large Australian megafauna that emerged after
the death of the dinosaurs. The reverse of this particular coin depicts
a Megalania against a coloured background with the
legend
'MEGALANIA - 1OZ 999 SILVER.' The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley
effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the
legend
'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA 2014 - 1 DOLLAR.'
The Megalania was a vast lizard that could be found across most of Eastern Australia. The creature ranged in size between
3.5 and 5 meters from head to tail. It seems likely that the Megalania hunted large animals like Kangaroos. It is believed
that it had toxic saliva that could cause infection and death to its victims.
