This Poseidon coin was released in 2014 as part of the Perth Mint's 'Gods of Olympus' series. The three coin series was struck in high relief with an antiqued finish. The reverse of this particular coin features Poseidon wielding his trident while riding the waves on his Chariot with the inscription 'POSEIDON.' The obverse houses the Ian Rank-Broadly portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend 'QUEEN ELIZABETH II - 2OZ 999 SILVER - 2014 TUVALU - 2 DOLLARS.'

After the Gods of Olympus overthrew the Titans and Giants the three brothers - Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon - each became rulers of parts of the world. (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2017) Zeus came to rule the sky, Hades the underworld, and Poseidon the seas. Poseidon carried with him a trident which was fashioned by the three Cyclops. (Theoi, 2017) With his trident he was able to summon and subdue storms and cause earthquakes. In addition to his role as god of the Sea, Poseidon was also a major civic god worshipped with emphasis in Athens and Cornith.
