The Centenary of Canberra commemorative business strike celebrates a hundred years since the Foundation Stones of Canberra were laid in 1913. The reverse features Walter Burley Griffin's original design for the city of Canberra along with the denomination and the legend "CENTENARY OF CANBERRA 1913 - 2013". The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2013".
Following Federation in 1901 the Commonwealth Parliament sat in Melbourne due to a lack of agreement on where the national capital should be. In 1908 the decision the location of Canberra was chosen and the Australian Capital Territory was declared in 1911. Following an international competition the design of Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, who had been working for the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, was chosen for Canberra. (Australian Government, 2016) In 1913 three golden trowels were used by Governor-General Lord Denman, Prime Minister Andrew Fisher, and Minister of Home Affairs King O'Malley to lay the foundation stones that would begin the construction of Australia's new capital city.
