Australia is home to a passionate thoroughbred racing culture and history. Horses first arrived in Australia at the beginning of colonisation in 1788, and horse racing soon followed in the early 1800s. The world-renowned Melbourne Cup was first held in 1861 and since then this sporting event has thrived. Today Melbourne is also home to the Australian Racing Museum.

Black Caviar is one of the country's most beloved racing icons. Born in 2006 in Nagambie, Victoria, and trained by Peter Moody, Black Caviar started her racing career at Flemington in 2009, winning her race by 5 lengths. The thoroughbred mare's stunning debut was a sign of things to come; she boasts an undefeated career of a record-breaking 25 races surpassing Australian legend, Phar Lap's, record. One of her most notable wins was the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2012. The multi-award winning sprinter was named Australian Racehorse of the Year three years in a row (2011-2013) and was the World Thoroughbred Racing Rankings World Champion Sprinter four times, just some proof of her strength and spirit. She was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in February 2013. Although beleaguered by injuries after the Royal Ascot, Black Caviar went on to win three more races before retiring in April 2013.

The Royal Australian Mint honoured Black Caviar's illustrious career by officially launching this proof silver coin. The reverse depicts an energetic Black Caviar and her jockey mid-race. Other details include the legend "BLACK CAVIAR 1oz. 999 Ag" and the denomination "1 DOLLAR". The obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing and crowned, with the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2013.
