Surfing in Australia is almost an institution. The beautiful beaches facing the Pacific Ocean make a perfect home for surfers from around the world. Surfing Australia was established in 1963 as the Australian Surfriders Association and celebrates its 50th birthday this year. To commemorate this the Royal Australian mint issued this uncirculated fifty cent. The reverse was designed by Aleksandra Stokic and shows the artists impression of a surfer on his board riding a wave. The legend FIFTY YEARS OF SURFING AUSTRALIA is cleverly written within a wave tunnel and also has the denomination 50. The obverse features an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2013.

It was back in 1915 that Duke Kahanamoku first introduced surfboard riding at Freshwater Beach. In commemoration of this, the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club will officially launch the 50th anniversary celebrations on the 21st November. Surfing is a national pastime in Australia and so many people have tried it at some stage during their lives. It is also an image portrayed on the official tourism Australia advertisement that is seen worldwide. The Australian colours of gold and green are worn when Team Australia compete at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games. They compete for the prestigious mantle of the "World's Best Surfing Nation". Each and every surfer trains at the High Performance Centre and receives expert coaching from professionals to maximise their potential. The results speak for themselves as Team Australia has won eight from the last possible thirteen world titles. The HPC can be proud of it's work as the Australian Open Team has won the last three world titles along with Junior Team winning the last four. At the recent 2013 Panama ISA World Surfing Games, Dimity Stoyle of Queensland Codie Klein of New South Wales completed a Gold and Silver medal haul in the women's competition. The men's team of Russell Molony, New South Wales, Thomas Woods, Burleigh Heads, Tim Macdonald, North Stradbroke and Wade Carmichael, New South Wales also recording great runs but unfortunately, Team Australia were pipped to the overall win by South Africa (Surfing Australia, 2014) .
