This Procoptodon piece was released in 2013 by the Perth Mint
as part of the Megafauna series. The series features five of the extraordinarily large Australian megafauna that emerged
after the death of the dinosaurs. The reverse of this particular coin
depicts a Procoptodon against a coloured background with the
legend
'PROCOPTODON - 1OZ 999 SILVER'. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley
effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the
legend
'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA 2013 - 1 DOLLAR.'
The Procoptodon, also known as the Giant Short-faced Kangaroo, was the largest and heaviest Kangaroo ever known.
(Anne Musser, 2015)
It has been estimated that the animal stood slightly taller than the Red Kangaroo but was far larger in build - weighing
around two and a half times heavier (~200kg). The creature had longer arms than the modern Kangaroo allowing it to reach
above their heads to reach branches for food.
