This Wombat piece was released in 2013 as part of the Perth mint 's Bush Babies series. The series features the infants of some iconic Australian animals. The reverse of this particular coin features a coloured depiction of a baby Wombat with the legend 'Australian Wombat.' The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend 'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER - 2011 - 50 CENTS.'

There are three species of Wombat that can be found across Australia: common, northern hairy-nosed, and southern hairy-nosed. The common wombat generally lives in wet partly forested areas while the southern hairy nosed is more likely to be found in dry open country. All wombats produce sophisticated burrows which, despite being solitary animals, they occasionally share with others. Unlike the quite secure common wombat, the northern hairy-nosed is critically endangered with all being located within 3 square kilometres of land in Epping Forst National Park, Queensland. It is estimated that there is around 230 northern hairy-nosed wombats remaining.
