The Kangaroo at Sunset coin was struck in sterling silver and the reverse
was designed by famous entertainer and artist, Rolf Harris. It shows a solitary kangaroo on the horizon with a low sun,
which casts a long shadow on the animal across the plain. The
legend
reads 1 OZ. FINE SILVER. The obverse of the coin features the traditional
Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing with tiara and earrings along with the
legend
ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2009 1 DOLLAR around the edge. This coin was named Kangaroo at Sunset and originally came in a
beautifully crafted wooden box with a sliding lid. It was embossed in gold with the Australian Government Crown along with
Royal Australian Mint. A Certificate of Authenticity came with the coin, which includes a short description of the coin and
information regarding the designer.
The kangaroo is a marsupial mammal of which there are over sixty different species. They range from the largest (Red Kangaroo)
to the smallest (Wallabies). The Red Kangaroo is the largest marsupial mammal in the world and can weigh up to 90 kilograms.
Kangaroos of differing species can be found all across Australia whether the climate is cold or hot and in desert or tropical
areas. They can even be found on beaches whilst others live in trees! All kangaroos are herbivorous, eating a range of plants
and shrubs. Most are nocturnal but some are active in the early morning and late afternoon. Kangaroos are also exported,
but live exports are prohibited by law. Exportation began in 1959 and it is known that kangaroo meat is exported to over
fifty-five countries and their skin is also widely sought
(Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2008)
. The Kangaroo, along with the Emu, were selected as symbols of Australia and are featured on the official Australian
coat of arms.
