The 2012 Shoes Under Siege fifty cent piece was released to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of Japanese attacks on Australian soil. The reverse depicts a map of Australia with impact zones showing the points of attack along with the date "1942", the denomination "50 CENTS" and the legend "BOMBING OF AUSTRALIA". The obverse features the standard Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2012".
During the Second World War Australia was directly targeted by a number of Japanese Air raids. The first attack, which would also prove the deadliest, occurred in 1942 when 242 aircraft attacked Darwin and killed at least 235 people.
