In 2011 the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) was held in Perth, Australia. To celebrate this event the Royal Australian Mint issued this one dollar commemorative piece. The reverse features the logo for CHOGM Perth with the legend "CHOGM 2011 PERTH, AUSTRALIA" and the denomination "1 DOLLAR". The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2010".

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is a major gathering of the heads of state from all nations in the Commonwealth. Each meeting generally has a key theme and a series of topics that the leaders discuss before establishing some sort of action plan and perhaps making some major declarations. For example at the 1977 CHOGM, Commonwealth leaders agreed unanimously to discourage sporting contact with South Africa in an attempt to reinforce the Commonwealth's opposition to apartheid and racism more generally. The 2011 Perth CHOGM was officially opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. The meeting focused around altering the rules for royal succession and the establishment of a Charter of the Commonwealth.
