In 2011 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia. The Royal Australian Mint released this five dollar piece to commemorate the royal visit. The reverse features sixteen St Edward's crowns representing the sixteen visits of Queen Elizabeth II to Australia. The reverse legend states "HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN ROYAL VISIT AUSTRALIAN 2011." The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2006" and the denomination "5 DOLLARS."

In late October 2011 the then 85-year-old HM Queen Elizabeth II and her 90-year-old husband Prince Philip visited Australia. The visit was often referred to as a 'Farewell Tour' referring to the belief that the royal couple would no longer be making the long-haul journey to Australia. Their visit included a tour of Canberra, Perth, Brisbane, and Melbourne with the key event being Her Majesty opening the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth. Since this 'Farewell Tour' Royal Visits have occurred with HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, HRH Prince Henry, and HRH Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.
