The 2011 National Service piece was issued to commemorate 60 years since the introduction of National Service in Australia. The reverse design is by Wojciech Pietranik and includes an aerial view of National Service Memorial that was erected at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The legend states "DEDICATED TO ALL AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL SERVICEMEN AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED" as well as "60th ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL SERVICE" and finally the denomination "FIFTY CENTS". The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2008".

Legislation creating the foundations for conscription were first introduced into Australia by Prime Minister Alfred Deakin in 1909. In 1951 national service was established in Australia in the twenty years that followed 287,000 Australian men were called up compulsory training in the Navy, Army, and Air Force. Some of these men would go on to service in military engagements with 212 dying in Borneo and Vietnam. (The National Servicemen's Association of Australia Inc, 2015)
