The S.25 Sandringham five dollar is part of the 'Flying Through Time - Aviation' series which features six coins that each commemorate the history of Australian aviation. The reverse was designed by W. Pietranik and features a depiction of the S.25 Sandringham with the legend "AVIATION HISTORY - S.25 SANDRINGHAM" and the denomination"5 DOLLARS." The obverse features an Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2010."

The S.25 Sunderland, known as the Short Sunderland, was a flying boat bomber constructed by Short Brothers and used by the Royal Australian Air Force and an array of other allied air forces. The versatile plane was key in the Second World War where it undertook offensive missions against submarines and rescued survivors of U-boat attacks. A Sunderland from the tenth squadron of the Royal Australian Air-force was the first to successfully destroy a U-boat without any additional assistance.Following the conclusion of the Second World War military use of the Sunderland declined and a number had their weaponryremoved and replaced by seating. These demilitarisedconversions were known as the Short S.25 Sandringham and were placed into service as passenger aircraft. The Rose Bay Water Airport in Sydney was Australia's first international airport and was commonly usedby S.25 Sandringhams operated by Ansett Flying Boat Services.
