The Dorothy Wall one dollar coin was issued between 2009 and 2011 to celebrate the life and work of Australian author
and illustrator Dorothy Wall. The reverse of the piece features Vladimir
Gottwald's impression of Dorothy Wall along with four depictions of her most famous creation the children's character Blinky
Bill. The reverselegend
states "DOROTHY WALL BLINKY BILL" with the denomination "ONE DOLLAR". The
obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the standard
legend
"ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA" along with the year of issue.
Dorothy Wall was born in New Zealand in 1894 and migrated to Sydney in 1914. Wall gained recognition as a children's book
illustrator, working on books such as 'Jacko - the Broadcasting Kookaburra' and 'The Amazing Adventures of Billy Penguin'.
(Diane Langmore, 1990)
In 1933 she published 'Blinky Bill: The Quaint Little Australia' followed by 'Blinky Bill Grows Up' and 'Blinky Bill
and Nutsy'. These books proved a huge success and the anthropomorphic koala Blinky Bill has become a well loved Australian
children's character.
