This Sugar Glider piece was released in 2010 as part of the Perth mint 's Bush Babies series. The series features the infants of some iconic Australian animals. The reverse of this particular coin features a coloured depiction of a baby sugar glider with the legend 'Australian Sugar Glider.' The obverse houses the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend 'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER - 2010 - 50 CENTS.'

The Sugar Glider is a species of gliding possum found in parts of mainland Australia, New Guinea and some of the Indonesian Islands. (Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, 2017) They are nocturnal creatures with large eyes and gliding membranes that extends from the forefoot to the hindfoot. As the seasons change the diet of the sugar glider changes as well - they are omnivores, often subsisting on insects during the summer and tree sap or gum throughout the winter. (Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania, 2017) The natural habitat of the species is threatened by human encroachment but they are not considered endangered due to their ability to adapt to new areas and survive in small patches of remnant bush.
