The Service Nurses
Australian Service Nurses first served with the Colonial Military Forces in South Africa, during the Boer War. Since then they have served in many countries around the world where their servicemen and women are deployed. They served throughout World War I and World War II, then in Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bougainville, East Timor, Egypt, England, France, Belgium, Greece, Salonika, Palestine, Mesopotamia and India and the more recent action in the Gulf and during the current conflict in Afghanistan. Their commitment and bravery knew no bounds as they helped those in need. It is estimated that 2,139 Australian Army Service Nurses were present during the first world war which does not include those that were serving in Australian Hospitals back home.
There is a new memorial in Canberra that was opened by the Honourable Sir William Deane and made of cast glass which shows the history of service nurses. The Australian Service Nurses National Memorial is a fitting tribute to these heroes and can be found on ANZAC Parade in the capital city. It was designed by Richard Moorhouse and features a timeline with photos and original text. The inscription on the memorial reads; In memory of Australian Service Nurses whose supreme sacrifice, courage and devotion were inspiring to those for whom they so willingly risked their lives. Their memory will also be our sacred trust. If anyone is searching for their lost ones history and place of burial, help is at hand. There is a service from the National Archives of Australia where the information is available (National Archive of Australia, 2014)
