This Gold Kangaroo coin struck in solid gold had the reverse designed by Ken Done, a world famous artist and entertainer. He is also a great Australian and it is fitting that he was asked by the RAM to design this coin incorporating the beloved Australian Kangaroo. The reverse design includes an adult kangaroo embracing its kid with some trees in the background. The legend reads "TEN DOLLARS". The obverse of the coin features the traditional Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, crowned and right-facing, along with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2009" around the edge.

This coin is part of a set which are all about the Kangaroo. Each has a different designer. The others included in this series are Reg Mombassa, Rolf Harris and the RAM design team. A Certificate of Authenticity came with the set, which includes a short description of the coins and information regarding the designers. An extract from the certificate reads 'Each of the four coins are struck on specially prepared blanks using hand-polished dies, following the Mint's strict quality guidelines. The finished product is a mirror-like flat surface complemented by a delicately frosted raised design.

The Kangaroo is probably Australia's most iconic animal. It is a marsupial mammal with over sixty different species ranging from the large Red Kangaroo to the small Wallabies. The Red Kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world and can weigh up to 90 kilograms. Kangaroos of differing species can be found all across Australia whether the climate is cold or hot and in desert or tropical areas. Some can even be found on beaches whilst others live in trees. All kangaroos are herbivorous, eating a range of plants and shrubs and most are nocturnal but some are active in the early morning and late afternoon. The Kangaroo, along with the Emu, were selected as symbols of Australia and are featured on the official Australian coat of arms.
