The Kangaroo Series Special Edition three coin set was produced to show Great Australian Artists in Colour. The coin was minted in sterling silver and is part of a three coin set which also includes Reg Mombassa and Rolf Harris. The mintage was limited to five thousand sets. The reverse of the coin was designed by Ken Done and features an adult kangaroo running across the desert in the artists inimitable style. It is shown in full colour and contains the legend ONE DOLLAR. Around the outside of this colourful centre is a silver outer with the legend KANGAROO SERIES KEN DONE. The obverse features an Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing with tiara and earrings. It includes the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2009. The set comes in a black presentation box with a numbered certificate.

The Kangaroo is probably the animal that is most commonly associated with Australia. The kangaroo is a marsupial mammal of which there are over forty different species. They range from the largest (Red Kangaroo) to the smallest (Wallabies). The Red Kangaroo is the largest marsupial mammal in the world. The Kangaroo, along with the Emu, were selected as symbols of Australia and are featured on the official Australian coat of arms.
