The Kangaroo is probably the animal that is most commonly associated with Australia. Its name derives from a misunderstanding between European explorers and Aborigines. When the explorer asked what the Kangaroo was, the Aborigine replied in his own language that he 'didn't understand'. The word was 'Kangaroo' and so it was named. The kangaroo is a marsupial mammal of which there are over forty different species. They range from the largest (Red Kangaroo) to the smallest (Wallabies). The Red Kangaroo is the largest marsupial mammal in the world. The Kangaroo, along with the Emu, were selected as symbols of Australia and are featured on the official Australian coat of arms (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2013) .
