The Postal Services Five Dollar coin was produced in celebration of 200 years of postal services in Australia. It was minted in Sterling Silver and was forty millimetres in diameter. There was also a one dollar coin celebrating the same occasion in the same year. The reverse of this coin was designed by the Royal Australian Mint and features a vintage post office site from the commonwealth Heritage List. It also contains the legend 200 YEARS OF POSTAL SERVICES IN AUSTRALIA. The obverse has an Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned and right-facing. The legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2009 5 DOLLARS" encirculates the image.

The coin was encapsulated inside an elegant, leatherette luxury presentation case lined with black velvet and satin, protected by a full-colour outer box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.It was during 2009 that Australia postal services celebrated 200 years as Australia's oldest, operating organisation.

On March 25, 1809, Isaac Nichols was appointed Postmaster of New South Wales and it is his portrait that appears on the one dollar version of the coin. In over 200 years of operation they have established one of the largest property portfolios in Australia (Auspost, 2013) . Their portfolio includes Post Offices, mail processing sites and warehouses, offices and call centres. Seventy-three of these are heritage properties included in the Commonwealth Heritage List.
