The commemoration of 150 years of state government in Queensland is celebrated by the release of this coin. It was struck
in sterling silver in 2006. It was released as part of a set containing a total of six coins. The other coins included in
the 150 years of state government commemorative set are Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory and New South
Wales. The
On the 22nd May 1856, a significant landmark in Australian history took place. The newly elected, Queensland State Parliament sat for the first time. Now, 150 years later, Queensland celebrates its sesquicentenary of responsible government. Since its inception, the Government has evolved into the 21st century with some alterations and enhancements. The main ones being the setting up of a secret ballot and the right of ALL men to vote. This may seem trivial but this alone put Australia ahead of its time regarding democratic development. Women were given the right to vote back in 1902, even though they could not be democratically elected until 1918.
