Between 2008 and 2013 the Royal Australian Mint produced a series of one dollar coins that commemorated the contributions made by a number of inspirational Australians. This piece celebrates the life of television personality and zookeeper Steve Irwin. The reverse was designed by Vladimir Gottwald and features a portrait of Irwin surrounded by a Koala, Crocodile, Snake, and Tortoise. The legend states "INSPIRATIONAL AUSTRALIANS: CONSERVATION" and "STEVE IRWIN 1962 - 2006". The obverse features the standard Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2009".

Born in Australia in 1962 Steve Irwin was an Australian television personality and the zookeeper of Australia Zoo. Irwin rose to an international level of fame in the mid 90's with the release of his documentary series 'The Crocodile Hunter'. In 2006 while filming in Queensland Irwin was killed by a stingray.
