The Australia Post one dollar coin was issued in 2009 to commemorate 200 years of postal services in Australia. The reverse of this piece features an impression of a posting box the likes of which were installed throughout Australia. The reverse legend states "ONE DOLLAR" and "200 YEARS OF POSTAL SERVICES IN AUSTRALIA". The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the standard legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2008".

The foundations for Australia's postal service can be traced back to a single former convict named Isaac Nichols who was appointed to manage all main arriving in the colony of New South Wales. As the colony became further established mail routes were developed, postmen hired, and more formal post offices were established. With the federation of Australia in 1901 the six separate colonial post and telegraph departments combined, creating the "Postmaster General's Department" (PMG). As technology developed the PMG took responsibility for managing the countries post, telecommunications, and broadcasting. Finally in 1975 the postal service we know today was created when PMG was split into two organisations "Australia Post" and "Telecom Australia". (Australia Post, 2017)
