This Sea Dragon piece was released in 2009 as part of the Perth mint's Sea Life series. The series celebrates some of Australia's most unique reef dwelling species. The reverse of this particular coin features a coloured depiction of the Sea Dragon with the legend 'AUSTRALIAN SEA LIFE - THE REEF' and "LEAFY SEA DRAGON'. The obverse houses the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend 'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - 50 CENTS - 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER - 2009."

The Leafy Sea Dragon is a camouflaged fish that can be identified by its leaf-shaped limbs that cover most of their bodies. (Mark McGrouther, 2015) These creatures can be found hiding in seaweed off the southern and eastern cost of Australia. The sea dragons have been threatened by collectors and growing levels of pollution and industrial runoff threaten the species. (National Geographic, 2017)
