The Planet Earth commemorative twenty cent coin was released to signify the efforts being made to ensure the sustainability of the Earth. The reverse was designed by Vladimir Gottwald and illustrates images of tsunami, floods, plate movement and salinity. In the centre of the coin is an outline of Australia. It also includes the legend "TWENTY CENTS INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PLANET EARTH". The obverse features an Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing and crowned. The legend reads "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2008".

International Year of Planet Earth provided an opportunity for us to use our knowledge to create awareness and show our children and grandchildren how to make it a safer, healthier and more prosperous place to live harmoniously. The thinking behind the United Nations when they named this event was to educate people to use Earth sciences for the achievement of sustainable development. Their ultimate objective is to provide the opportunity for all nations to take part in, and benefit from the project. Irrespective of the development stage of any country, they can put the data into use from the project. The International Year of Planet Earth encompassed the years of 2007-2009. The aim was to make people aware of the thrilling knowledge we have acquired about our planet and captivate people's intelligence, resourcefulness and ingenuity. It was hoped that this knowledge, which has been gathered and compiled by our planets 400,000 Earth Scientists, would also ensure greater and more effective theoretical and practical utilisation by society. The acquired knowledge can be used to make all people who inhabit the planet conscious and more perceptive with regards to environmental conservation.

The Year's ultimate goal was expressed in the Year's subtitle, Earth Science for Society (Planet Earth, 2014) . The International Year actually ran from January 2007 to December 2009. The central year of the triennium (2008) was announced by the UN General Assembly as the UN Year. While elevating sound judgement when using our Earths resources The UN views the Year as an excellent benefactor to their sustainable development objectives. This proactive approach will reduce perils and hazards for all societies in the world through supporting improved directorate and preparation. The International Year of Planet Earths leading and major activities will serve within the Science and Outreach programmes. Ten broad humanitarian relevancy's and multifaceted topics comprise The Science Programme: physical and mental wellness, weather, groundwater, bodies of water, soils, deep Earth, megacities, hazards, natural resources, and life. Geoscience Australia has also contributed to the project by providing online data among other benefits to the cause. Geoscience Australia is dedicated to improving the international knowledge base of geoscience. Geoscience Australia initiated assistance in the decision processes efficiency about planet Earths' natural resources and physical and mental well-being. They aim to project further consciousness and perception by consolidating International Year of Planet Earth objectives into their existing agendas. The Geoscience Australia Education Centre, and other outreach strategies will be utilised to make certain that this commemoration will bring forth a global and varied impact (Geoscience Australia, 2014) .
