This Rugby Centenary ten dollar coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint in order to celebrate 100 years of the game of Rugby. This coin was struck in solid gold. This game is considered one of the best sports to test skill and courage and is always well supported throughout Australia. The reverse was designed by Vladimir Gottwald and features the symbol of the Australian Rugby League. It includes the legend CENTENARY OF RUGBY LEAGUE 1908 - 2008 TEN DOLLARS. The obverse features an Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned and right facing along with the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2008.

Rugby League was first played in Australia over 100 years ago. The game is a spin-off from the more popular Rugby Union game. The origins of rugby league goes back to Huddersfield, England around 1895. The break away from rugby union came about over a dispute over payments for players missing work. The north of England had complained that the rules favoured Southern teams and on 27th August 1895, 20 Northern clubs formed the Northern Rugby Football Union. This newly formed league drew a big response from the Rugby Football Union as it imposed sanctions against any players or clubs that participated in it. This drove a big divide between the two leagues that was never to be bridged. With the newly formed league being separate from the rest, each league evolved its rules differently. So as to avoid confusion amongst the public, the latter was commonly referred to as rugby league. This pattern was echoed in Australia and New Zealand, although it was also a class distinction that separated the leagues. The growing tension was exacerbated by an incident in 1907, when a working class player, Alex Burdon broke his arm while playing for the New South Wales team, and received no compensation for his time off work. The offshoot in Australia was the New South Wales Rugby Football League and mirroring the events back in England, the New South Wales Rugby Union imposed sanctions on any player or club participating in the breakaway league. Rugby League today no longer plays in the shadows of the powerful Rugby Union.
